Richard Caldicott

Richard Caldicott graduated from the Royal College of Art, London in 1987, and in the early 1990’s co-curated several group shows of young British and American artists in temporary spaces in New York, including works by Polly Apfelbaum, Christine Borland, Fieroza Doorsen, Graham Gussin, Byron Kim, Siobhan Liddell, Christopher Muller, Simon Patterson and Gavin Turk. During a research fellowship at the Royal College of Art he curated How Noisy Everything Grows, showing works by Martin Boyce, Tom Gidley, Graham Gussin, Michael McDonough and Roderick Packe. Calidicott’s contemporary still life photographs were the subject of the exhibition On the Entity of Objects (curated by Stefan Gronert) at the Kunstmuseum Bonn (1997). Since then Caldicott’s photographs have transformed mundane utilitarian objects into elegant, luminous, colour saturated forms reminiscent of abstract “colour-field” painting. Solo shows of this series have been realised at Dorothee de Pauw Gallery, Brussels (1998), Finesilver Gallery, San Antonio, Texas (2000), Camera Work Gallery, Berlin (2000), Hamiltons Gallery,London(1999, 2000 and 2002), Ariel Meyerowitz Gallery, New York (2002 and 2004). Most recently, Caldicott has been working with a reduced concrete formal vocabulary in geometric abstraction on works that refer to an architectural sensibility and a modernist aesthetic. A solo show of this work was exhibited at Hamiltons Galley, London in 2004. Caldicott’s future photography projects for 2005 include exhibitions in Dubai, Miami and Dallas.
